  • ABOUT CRIME STOPPERS

"We don't have to know who YOU are - to know who THEY are."

    Our History

    Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers

Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers (MRCS) was formed in 1984 by a group of concerned retailers, regional Law Enforcement Officials and the support of the Retail Merchants Association. This makes MRCS one of the oldest Crime Stoppers organizations in the USA.

Crime Stoppers USA was formed slightly before 1984 by a New Mexico Police Officer and the concept spread rapidly. Today there are well over 2000 organizations nationwide. Most are called Crime Stoppers, but some are known as CrimeSolvers, CrimeLine, TIP Line and others.

The concerned citizens in the Greater Richmond area felt then, as we do today, that an organized citizenry offering rewards could make a significant contribution toward Law Enforcement's capability to arrest criminals. The concept has been recognized as being very successful.

    Our Organization

Serving seven jurisdictions in the Greater Richmond Area

Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers is administered by a Board of Directors. The Board is made up of 30 volunteer Directors and representatives of area Law Enforcement jurisdictions. MRCS represents the City of Richmond, Henrico County, Hanover County, Goochland County, New Kent County, Caroline County and Charles City County. Our Police Coordinator is the Chief of Henrico County Police. Currently, he delegates that responsibility to Lt. C. J. Maurice . Lt. Maurice oversees the administration of presenting reward information and other details for the consideration of the Board of Directors.

The Coordinator's responsibility specifically is to create for the Board a list of proposed rewards as case numbers only with no names, along with their justifications, from the various jurisdictions for Board approval.

The Public Relations face of the Board in Radio, TV or Print presentations is today the responsibility of Detective Derrick Longoria of the City of Richmond Police Department.

Tipsters call the 804-780-1000 tipline and are assured of their anonymity by being given an identification number. Again, no names! Approved rewards are paid out in cash by the identification number. Hence our slogan,"We don't have to know who you are to know who they are!"

  • FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

"We don't need to know who YOU are - to know who THEY are."

    What is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a partnership with the media, community and law enforcement to fight crime by furnishing a cash reward to an anonymous person who telephones the tip line with information which leads to the arrest of individuals for felony crimes. Each week the area news media gives special treatment in publishing and broadcasting details on the "Crime of the Week".

    How does Crime Stoppers Work?

When you call the Crime Stoppers line 780-1000, you give your information anonymously and then you will be assigned a special code number. This code umber is how you will identify yourself in all future dealings with Crime Stoppers.

Will I have to testify in court?

No. You will remain anonymous and no one will know your identity.

    Are Crime Stoppers calls recorded?

No. To ensure anonymity the calls to Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers are not recorded or monitored.

    Could Caller ID identify me?

No. The Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers tip line does not have caller ID, once again to ensure the caller is not identified.

    Who qualifies for a reward?

Only if information goes through Crime Stoppers can a person be considered for reward. If the information leads to an arrest a reward up to $1000 may be recommended.

Does the reward have to be reported as taxable income?

Once again, the caller remains anonymous through the entire process. The reward is paid in cash and the code number identifies the recipient. Law enforcement is not involved in the reward payment.

    Who operates Crime Stoppers?

The Board of Directors consists of concerned citizens representing the City of Richmond, and the Counties of Caroline, Charles City, Goochland, Henrico, Hanover and New Kent. The Board oversees the operation of the program and approves rewards to be paid.

    Who pays for the rewards?

Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers is funded solely by private, tax-deductible donations from the community including businesses, corporations, clubs associations and initials. No tax monies are used.

How will I know if I am getting a reward?

You need to contact Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers after a few weeks and furnish your code number for the information on your case.
